The HD1 is a single transducer unit that can be installed to protect hulls, drives, rudders, stabilizers, and more. This single transducer system can be combined with other systems to provide broad protection for vessels of any size. The HD1 facilitates an easier installation process compared to larger controllers when installing a transducer in an area where routing signal cables back to a larger central controller is impractical.

Drives, Rudders, & More

Not just for hulls – Hull Shield can protect your drives and running gear too! Drives are isolated from the hull by motor mounts, gaskets, seals and other insulative materials that block ultrasound from passing to shafts, props, and rudders. Because of this, the drive system requires dedicated transducers to gain the most benefit from ultrasonic anti-fouling. Inboards, pods, sterndrives, and sail-drives can all be fitted with a transducer to enable full anti-fouling protection. Rudders are isolated from the hull in the same way as the drives and also require a dedicated transducer.

Hull Shield Antifouling Technology

Ultrasonic antifouling works by using sound waves to physically repel fouling organisms away from the surface before they can permanently attach. As a bonus, the higher frequency band of ultrasound also disrupts the reproductive cycles of certain types of bio-fouling.

Hull Shield systems operate similar to a stereo and speakers. The controller sends ultrasound signals to transducers attached to the hull or running gear, the transducers receive the high-frequency signals, transforming them into ultrasonic pulses.

Each pulse creates a microscopic shockwave that runs across the hull and drive gear. These ultrasonic waves work to ablate, loosen, and repel fouling which is contacting the hull and drive surfaces. When used in conjunction with an ablative bottom paint, Hull Shield systems are the most effective and long-term antifouling solution available.

HD1 Controller Module

The compact HD1 controller is designed to be a low-power device that can be easily installed inline with a single transducer. HD1 controllers generate the ultrasonic signals which power the transducer and consume about 0.25Ah of current at maximum potential (when the battery system voltage is at or above 12.7V). The controller is to be mounted in an accessible location near a sufficient 12V battery system supply. The transducer signal cables are routed back to the controller.

HD series controllers operate on 12VDC battery systems. Please contact us for alternate options for 24VDC systems.

Single Ultrasonic Emitter

This system is equipped with one transducer emitter used to generate the ultrasonic signals which disrupt marine fouling.

Solar / Wind / Low-Power Mode

The HD1 controller is designed for optimum efficiency and ultrasound power delivery. The system is engineered to provide stable operation, even when powered from solar and wind supported power systems with fluctuating battery cycles. The controller will actively adjust the output power to match the current charge-state of the battery system – conserving power when necessary to preserve battery power and extend the length of time the system can operate.

The controller actively monitors system voltage levels which allows it to automatically enter  power conservation mode (PCM) when the system batteries are not being maintained. PCM is a completely automated process which reduces the average system power consumption to as low as 5 watts depending on available battery power.

Coverage

HULLS – each transducer provides approximately 200sqft of protected underwater surface area. A rough estimate of your underwater surface area can be calculated by doubling your draft, adding it to your beam, then multiplying by your LWL (length at water line).

DRIVES & RUNNING GEAR –  one transducer can provide dedicated protection for any single isolated part. Examples of isolated parts are drive shaft & props, rudders, exterior engine brackets, struts, swim platforms, and trim tabs. Because these parts are isolated from the hull and each other, a transducer is required for each isolated part.

The HD1 Package Includes:

  • 1x Hull Shield HD1 Control Module with Integrated Power Cable and 5ft of integrated Signal Cable
  • 1x Submersible Ultrasonic Transducers with 15ft of Cable
  • 1x Epoxy Kit
  • 1x Printed Installation and Operation Manual

Easy Installation

Hull Shield systems are simple in function and installation. Systems can be installed in a single day and require no technical skills. Besides the simple tools most customers have, everything required for an installation is included in with our products.

The Hull Shield controllers are best mounted in an accessible compartment. The transducers are simply attached directly to the surface of the hull or drive with the supplied 2-part epoxy.

FAQ  for Hull Shield HD1 ultrasonic antifouling system –

1) How does the Hull Shield HD1 ultrasonic antifouling system effectively prevent marine biofouling on vessels?

The Hull Shield HD1 ultrasonic antifouling system emits precise ultrasonic pulses over a broad frequency bandwidth designed to disrupt the settlement and reproductive cycle of barnacles, algae, and other marine organisms. These ultrasonic shockwaves create a hostile environment on the hull and running gear surfaces, preventing fouling organisms from attaching permanently. This technology works synergistically with soft ablative bottom paints for maximum long-term protection and reduced maintenance.

2) What vessel parts can the Hull Shield HD1 ultrasonic antifouling system protect, and why are dedicated transducers necessary?

Due to the insulative properties of motor mounts, gaskets, and seals, the drives, rudders, and running gear are electrically isolated from the main hull. The Hull Shield HD1 ultrasonic antifouling system requires dedicated transducers to be installed on each isolated component—such as drive shafts, propellers, rudders, and external engine brackets—to ensure the ultrasonic signals effectively reach and protect those specific parts. Each transducer covers approximately 200 square feet of underwater surface, making multiple transducers necessary for large or multi-component vessels.

3) How does the Hull Shield HD1 system manage power consumption, especially when operating on renewable energy systems like solar or wind power?

The Hull Shield HD1 ultrasonic antifouling system features intelligent power management that continuously monitors the vessel’s battery voltage. When operating on solar or wind power systems with fluctuating voltage levels, the HD1 controller automatically enters a power conservation mode, reducing current draw to as low as 0.075Ah. If the battery voltage falls below about 12.1V (50% capacity), the system enters sleep mode, suspending ultrasonic emission to preserve battery life, then resumes operation when the battery recharges. This ensures continuous protection without draining vital power resources.

4) What are the recommended steps for installing the Hull Shield HD1 ultrasonic antifouling system to achieve optimal effectiveness?

Installation involves mounting the compact HD1 controller near a 12V battery supply and attaching the waterproof transducer directly to the hull or isolated component surface using the included two-part epoxy kit. Proper surface preparation is critical: the substrate must be cleaned, dried, and lightly abraded for optimal adhesion and ultrasonic transmission. Transducers should be located below the waterline at recommended positions such as near the propeller or rudder, with attention to waterproof cable routing back to the controller. The system includes comprehensive installation instructions, and the entire setup can be performed in a single day using basic tools.

5) Can the Hull Shield HD1 ultrasonic antifouling system be expanded for larger vessels or more complex setups?

Yes, individual HD1 transducer systems can be combined for broader antifouling coverage on larger vessels. Each transducer delivers dedicated ultrasonic protection to approximately 200 square feet or isolated vessel components. Multiple HD1 units work in unison to ensure full hull and running gear protection, allowing customization based on vessel size and configuration.

6)How does the Hull Shield HD1 ultrasonic antifouling system complement traditional antifouling paints?

While ultrasonic antifouling prevents new marine growth by disrupting organism attachment, it is most effective when paired with a soft ablative bottom paint. This combination protects against fouling while also reducing the frequency of hull cleaning and paint reapplication, greatly extending the lifespan of expensive anti-fouling coatings and minimizing hull abrasion from scrubbing or pressure washing.

7)What kind of warranty and support does the Hull Shield HD1 ultrasonic antifouling system come with?

Hull Shield offers a lifetime warranty on all HD series ultrasonic antifouling products, including the HD1 Controller system. This warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship, assuring customers of durability and ongoing performance. Full installation support and operation manuals are included with each unit.

8)Is professional installation necessary for the Hull Shield HD1 ultrasonic antifouling system?

The system is designed for straightforward installation with detailed instructions and all required materials included, making it feasible for experienced boat owners to self-install. However, professional installation is recommended if the vessel configuration is complex or if transducers must be placed in difficult-to-access locations to ensure maximum effectiveness.
